2026 SunSmart Campaign

The annual SunSmart campaign is run by the HSE’s National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), in collaboration with Healthy Ireland and cross-sectoral partners. They are working together to support people to reduce their risk of skin cancer by protecting their skin from the sun.

The aim of the campaign is to reduce your risk of skin cancer by increasing awareness and engagement with the steps you, your family, friends and colleagues can take to protect your skin from the sun

  • The sun doesn’t have to be strong to damage your skin. UV can be high even on cool or cloudy days. Protect your skin every day you’re outdoors: slip on clothing, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses. #SunSmart
  • Did you know that UV rays can damage your skin even on cloudy days? UV rays cannot be seen or felt and can pass through cloud cover. Follow the #SunSmart 5 S’s to protect your skin.
  • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Ireland and the number of people being diagnosed with skin cancer is rising rapidly. Yet skin cancer is largely preventable by protecting your skin from UV rays and not using sunbeds. #SunSmart

  • Children’s skin is extra sensitive to UV. Make sun protection part of your family’s daily routine: hats, long sleeves, shade, and SPF 50+ sunscreen help keep your family safe from the sun’s UV rays.
  • A tan might fade, but skin damage doesn’t. Exposure to UV radiation from the sun damages skin cells, speeds up the visible signs of skin ageing and can increase the risk of skin cancer. #SunSmart
  • Even one bad sunburn can damage your skin’s DNA and increase your lifetime risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, which is the most serious form. This risk is higher when burns happen in childhood or your teenage years. #SunSmart

  • If you work outdoors, you are exposed to 2 to 3 times more UV radiation from the sun than people who work indoors, putting you at higher risk of developing skin cancer. Be #SunSmart.
  • If you work outdoors, you are exposed to 2 to 3 times more UV radiation from the sun than people who work indoors. Cover up with protective clothing, use SPF 30+ sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and take breaks in the shade when possible. #SunSmart
  • Skin damage doesn’t just happen on holiday in hot, sunny places. The sun is strong enough to cause damage here in Ireland especially between April and September, even on cloudy days, so remember to be #SunSmart
  • UV can be high even when the temperature isn’t. Whether you’re exploring the Wild Atlantic Way or relaxing in the garden, check the UV Index and protect your skin. #SunSmart

There is no such thing as a safe suntan. Exposure to UV radiation from the sun damages skin cells, speeds up the visible signs of skin ageing and can increase the risk of skin cancer. Follow the #SunSmart 5 S’s to protect your skin
