The Berlin Wall, and indeed the Iron Curtain, are familiar concepts for anyone who has gone past school-going age in this country – we learned about them in history.
But the idea that more than 12,000 kilometres of greenways, biodiversity hubs and nature trails have since sprung up along the track of the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall may not be as well known to some.
Castlebar Library is pleased to host a talk next week – From Iron Curtain to Green Belt: Biodiversity at its Best – which will shine a spotlight on The Green Belt, an area that has been redeveloped over nearly four decades and which is now Europe’s longest green network.
Dagmar Wennacher, a familiar face to many in Castlebar from her days as former chairwoman of the Höchstadt-Castlebar Friendship Association, will present on The Green Belt, taking a look at an important environmental initiative almost forty years in the making.
The talk will take place in Castlebar Library on Thursday, August 13 at 7.00pm – a date specifically chosen by Dagmar, as it will mark the 65th anniversary of the start of construction on the Berlin Wall.
