Grace, written by Jody O’Neill tells the story of a girl who has a relationship with her father where no words are needed. In fact, Grace doesn’t use words to speak at all. At its core, the show helps families see communication in a new way. Through movement, music, imagery, and captioning, it demonstrates that connection doesn’t depend on spoken language. That’s a powerful message for children and adults alike.
It’s also designed to be inclusive. All performances are relaxed and audio described, with creatively embedded access features including captions. An Irish Sign Language interpreted performance is available on Sunday 17th May, 5pm. Families who may not always feel theatre is accessible to them will find a warm welcome here.
Fiacre Ryan, a non-speaking Mayo writer contributed to the development of “Grace”. Working with playwright Jody O’Neill, Once Off Productions, and Graffiti Theatre Company, Fiacre helped ensure an authentic portrayal of autism.
The Irish Times noted, it is “a moving depiction of the complex way a girl with autism experiences life”, while praising the performances for their “delicacy and clarity… a graceful piece of work that deserves to be seen both by those affected by autism and those not.” It was also highlighted in The Irish Times “Best Theatre of 2024,” with Chris McCormick describing it as “stirring” and celebrating Jody O’Neill’s ability to reveal “the beauty that autistic people are capable of.”
It’s the kind of show that stays with you—sparking conversations and offering a new perspective on communication, connection, and the many ways we understand one another.
