Mayo Day 2020 on Mayo.ie – Saturday May 2nd

We will fly our flags for our county and for our people, but rather than coming together at a flagship event we will celebrate with our families in the safe environs of our homes and gardens. This year, Mayo Day will take place solely online, with live streams and content on www.mayo.ie and Mayo.ie’s social media channels.

There will be Mayo Day music and entertainment like previous years’ events, but this time www.mayo.ie will be the stage for Mayo Day Live – Global Voices, featuring joyous performances from artists such as Lisa Canny, Cathal Gavin and Stuart Moyles coming to you live from their homes.s

Mayo Day Live – Global Voices, presented by Liam Horan and Louise Duffy will also feature interviews from Mayo people in communities in New York, Cleveland, Chicago, Malaysia , Dubai, and Sydney and closer to home, from our Mayo Associations in Galway, Dublin and Manchester.

As part of a special campaign ‘A Minute for Mayo’ messages from National and International leaders and familiar Mayo faces will grace the screen with messages of hope and solidarity on this special Mayo Day of 2020,
Since we cannot enjoy the spectacle of Mayo GAA performing in McHale Park for another while yet, Two familiar faces from our Mayo team will perform their skills live in your home with an exclusive Mayo Day Skills Session which will air on the Mayo.ie Facebook page at 11am. We ask all budding footballers to wear their colours and tag us in videos of their best attempts at replicating their heroes’ skills – the winning entry will receive a signed Mayo Day jersey!

Although, at this time, we cannot visit the incredible parts of this county, we want to highlight our many beautiful places with a collection of the most-loved images of Co Mayo shared on our social media channels – to remind us all of how lucky we are to have so much on our doorsteps and we can look forward to enjoying #WhenWeTravelAgain.

Every year Mayo Day places a spotlight on our indigenous craft and food companies at our flagship event, this year we will ‘Support Local’ with an online marketplace on www.mayo.ie linking to companies who have online stores and are open for business during this time.

#HometoMayo is a competition for you to win two flights home to Mayo from anywhere around the world for someone you love or for yourself in better days ahead! To win we want to see your ‘Mayo Moment’ a special moment of what mayo means to you or during the current period of restriction – photos and videos from your home with your family, your pets, your garden, your newly sowed raised beds – all of these are moments that are part of a very unusual time in our lives. By sharing them with us you could share an even more special moment in 2021 with a loved one who is currently living abroad.

The next instalment of the Mayo Day video ‘Our People, Our Place, Our Day’, that went viral around the world in 2017, will be released just in time for #MayoDay2020

Mayo Day is all about wearing your green and red with pride, no matter where you reside in the globe. This year will be no different, we ask you to wear and fly the colours as emblems of connection with one another. We hope that you will place your flags in your windows, in your gardens, or tie red and green ribbons or scarves around your trees to show that We Stand With You our frontline workers from Mayo who are working so hard and giving up so much to fight the virus. We ask for EVERYONE to show their green and red on Mayo Day in honour of the resilience that we have mastered as a people over the generations.

This Mayo Day is a chance to be part of the global Mayo family reunion and it promises to be something really special !

We ask that you use the dedicated hashtag #MayoDay to share with us your involvement as part of a day that will bring our county together as we remain apart.
