Castlebar Sanctuary Runners CLG

Sanctuary Runners exists to bring people together through running and walking in solidarity, friendship and respect. Founded to respond to the isolation experienced by people seeking asylum and those new to Ireland, the organisation creates safe, welcoming spaces where everyone can participate equally, regardless of background, nationality or immigration status. Through weekly volunteer-led groups, Sanctuary Runners promotes physical activity, mental wellbeing and meaningful social connection. By wearing the same colours and moving side by side, participants demonstrate solidarity in action and build genuine friendships across cultures. Beyond individual benefits, Sanctuary Runners contributes positively to the broader community. It supports integration by creating regular opportunities for interaction between new communities and long-established residents. This shared participation reduces stigma, strengthens social cohesion and fosters mutual understanding. In doing so, Sanctuary Runners helps build healthier, more inclusive communities where belonging and wellbeing are accessible to all.
