Cumann Liathróid Láimhe Thuar Mhic Éadaigh (Tourmakeady Handball Club)
We are a GAA Handball Club founded in 2018, catering for boys/girls and men/women from age 6 to 60+. The traditional Irish sport of handball has been played in our parish for 200 years but was dormant for a long time until the revival of activities in 2018. Although we are a sports club, our essential objective is the promotion of positive physical and mental health, with a strong emphasis on social inclusion and diversity. Handball is the medium by which we achieve this objective. It is a sport for life that can be played by anybody at a recreational or competitive level. It is very sociable and members who attend our sessions spend as much time talking to each other as they do playing; this is a particularly important outlet for men aged 35-55. Another of our core objectives is the promotion of the Irish language and we work closely with other local community groups to do so. We also run activities and mini-projects in conjunction with organisations such as Mayo Sports Partnership, Mayo Cancer Support Association, and Mayo Mental Health Association.
