Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (Mayo volunteer branch)
IWDGs is a charity whose purpose is the conservation & better understanding of Irish cetaceans (whales, dolphins, & porpoises) & their habitats through research, study, education & interpretation. Mayo IWDG branch is based in a live stranding hotspot for dolphins where community based volunteers regularly save many dolphins who have made a navigational mistake and beached on the shoreline. Blacksod in Co. Mayo is one of the main live stranding hotspots in Ireland and frequently see common dolphins accidentally stranded. in 2022, 26 common dolphins live stranded and thanks to local IWDG volunteers, trained locally, 24 dolphins survived the stranding event. IWDG volunteers also record sighting of whales, dolphins and porpoises from local headlands, monitoring the increased movement of Humpback whales to Mayo waters and frequently organise beach cleanups.
