Mayo Traditional Orchestra
Mayo Traditional Orchestra was established in September 2020 as a response to the wealth of talented young musicians living in Mayo who have a deep interest in Irish traditional music. While there was always an abundance of individuals and groups playing in isolation in myriad parts of the county, prior to the establishment of Mayo Traditional Orchestra there was no county-wide orchestra dedicated to Irish traditional music which allowed these young performers to perform together. Mayo Traditional Orchestra was founded by Eric Cunningham who is also its Artistic Director. The formation of Mayo Traditional Orchestra comes on the back of Cunningham having founded Galway Traditional Orchestra in January 2019. The Galway version, which has now more the 76 members, has proven to be a resounding success and while many of its exciting plans for 2020 were thrown into disarray with the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic, a planned performance at Carnegie Hall and a broadcast of its next concert on TG4 still remain on the cards. The orchestra's rehearsal base is at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar. The Conductor of Mayo Traditional Orchestra Ita Geraghty lives at Shrule, Co Mayo. www.MayoTraditionalOrchestra.ie
