Soroptimist International

Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International is a worldwide service organisation for women. We are committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide. Soroptimists educate, empower and enable women and girls to improve their lives. Soroptimists seek to have our voice heard to enrich the lives of women and girls and make a difference locally, nationally and internationally. The word “Soroptimist” is a combination of the Latin words “soror” meaning Sister and “optima” meaning best - so we want the best for women. Soroptimists implement projects across the world, advocate at local, national and international levels and enable women and girls to reach their full potential. We organise a national public speaking competition, Orange the World campaign in conjunction with the United Nations (awareness of gender-based violence), fundraisers for charities, girls' conference, coffee mornings. Our National project for 2025-2026 is "Hidden in Plain Sight", to raise awareness, educate communities and advocate for victims of human trafficking across Ireland. We have 21 members in Castlebar Club and 290 in Ireland.
