“At War With Mercy” is a play with music by Leonard Cohen.

Proudly hosted by Mulranny Arts in The Oratory of The Old Convent, Mulranny (F28 F8N8) on Saturday 12th July 8pm.
ย
Doors Open at 7.30pm
Limited Tickets, please book early –ย https://www.mulrannyarts.com/atwarwithmercy
ย
In 2016 Leonard Cohen worked with Irish writer John MacKenna to produce Between Your Love and Mine, a Mass for theatre, written in response to the deaths of a number of young people. That show did two sold-out national tours, including Aras an Uachtarain and the NCH.
ย
The idea behind At War With Mercy had been discussed by Cohen and MacKenna (friends of more than thirty years) but Cohenโ€™s death in 2016 brought those talks to an end. In 2024, working with co-writer Angela Keogh and musicians Katie Jacques, Shane Oโ€™Sullivan and Dave Day, the idea was revived and At War With Mercy is the result.
ย
At War With Mercy is a beautiful, moving, poignant and life-affirming show produced by Mend & Makedo Theatre Co.

Join BirdWatch Ireland’s Mayo Branch for their July outing to Downpatrick Head on Sunday 13th July 2025.
ย
July is a great month for cliff nesting seabirds. Young guillemots, just 8 days old, are jumping from the cliff to join their fathers and swim out to sea. He will accompany his chick over winter. The kittiwakes will be noisily feeding their young. Whilst close to the cliff top solitary fulmar chicks are being fattened up to be abandoned to fledge on their own. From our vantage point we may spot some passing gannets, other pelagics and possibly some cetaceans.
ย
The morning is the best time to view these birds as the easterly facing cliffs are easier to observe. We will take the short walk up to the cliffs whilst observing the blowhole on the way, a favourite site for rock doves of which Mayo still has a few pure bred individuals. A telescope is useful as some of the viewing is distant particularly on the sea stack. As usual we welcome non members of BirdWatch Ireland and children must be accompanied. Bring your own refreshments and dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

Tonight’s Islandeady Group Walk will begin at Marty’s Halfway House – Drimneen – at 7pm.
All are welcome.

Launch of Heritage Trail and Guidebook on Tรกin Bรณ Fliodhaise โ€“ The Cattle Raid of Mayo
The Iron Age ring forts, which dot the modern landscape, have imbued in them tales of Celtic mythology based on alliances and divisions of royal chieftains and tribes. These sites and their environs were the locations of great ceremonial gatherings and festivals, of major battles involving large armies as well as warriors or champions with superhuman strength engaged in single combat, and of cattle raids.
Tรกin Bรณ Fliodhaise โ€“ The Cattle Raid of Mayo, an adventurous Celtic mythology saga, is a prequel to the great Irish saga Tรกin Bรณ Cuailnge. It describes how a cattle raid brought Queen Meadhbh and her army from Rรกth Chruachรกin in County Roscommon on a journey through Mayo, to reach their final destination at Rath Muireagรกin near Glencastle in Erris. The purpose of the raid was to steal away the prized Maol or hummel cow, which was reputed to supply enough milk daily for three hundred men, their wives and children, as well as the herds and wealth of the resident Gamhanraidh.
We invite you to attend the official launch of the โ€˜Tรกin Bรณ Fliodhaise โ€“ Cattle Raid of Mayoโ€™ Heritage Trail and Guidebook by Minister Dara Calleary at Enniscoe House, Castlehill, Crossmolina (F26 EA34) on Saturday, 19th July 2025 at 5.00 p.m.
The Heritage trail consists of 14 site specific information signs located at key sites in Mayo. The launch includes the unveiling of one of the information signs in the beautiful grounds of Enniscoe estate, giving you an opportunity to see the resident maol cattle herd, followed by refreshments in Enniscoe House – the last Great House of North Mayo. This project was developed by The Tรกin Bรณ Fliodhaise Project Steering Committee & Comhar Dรบn Chaochรกin Teo with the support of The Department of Rural and Community Development under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme 2019, the Cill Chomรกin Rural Social Scheme, รšdarรกs na Gaeltachta, Mayo County Council, Coillte, The National Parks & Wildlife Service, Slรกinte Ireland Tours, Cruachรกn Ai Visitor Centre, Mayo North and various community groups throughout the county.

Regenera โ€“ Revitalizing Our Waters through Sports
The Regenera Project is a European project aiming to improve the environmental impact of water sports.
This project is part of a wide-ranging approach to bringing the concept of regeneration to local communities and water sports users where it can have the most impact. Regeneration is a concept that goes beyond sustainability. Where, as opposed to leaving a certain space as we found it, can we do some small actions to leave it in a healthier position.
By working with these communities and sharing knowledge around the positive impacts we can have on our environment and biodiversity, we hope to empower those who engage in water sports to be confident that they are positively impacting the space around them.
There will be a community information meeting on the Regenera Project Wednesday 20th August from 11am – 3pm at Keel Community Centre, Achill Island. All are welcome.

Turtle Tots are thrilled to announce that their new Autism Swim classes will start on Sunday the 31st of August at the Great National Hotel Ballina.
Each session is 30 minutes long and one carer is in the pool per child for the duration of the session. A standard term is 10 weeks in duration, and the cost of a 10-week term is โ‚ฌ210 – โ‚ฌ230. These Autism Swim classes are suitable for children aged from 3 years, up until their 6th Birthday.
The aim of this course is to develop the childโ€™s swimming ability by building on their natural reflexes whilst also having fun. For families have a really special time with their child in the pool, they sing a lot of songs and try to build water confidence in an enjoyable way. They aim to bring children forward on their swimming adventure so they are ready to join in other group lessons for older children. The difference between their standard swim classes and their Autism Swim programme are as follows;
โ€ข The pace of activities and learning is slowed down and there is more repetition, so the child has more time to learn and build their confidence.
โ€ข Visual cards are used to back up what the teacher says with a visual cue.
โ€ข Awareness!!! Because the classes are specifically for children on the autism spectrum – there is more consideration of their abilities.
โ€ข A safe and non-judgmental learning environment is provided so that both children and parents can enjoy the classes.
Instructors support all levels and parents are in the water to guide them too.
Turtle Tots teachers are specially trained with Autism Swim Australia, and their award-winning programme was written by a former Turtle Tots teacher and Aquatics Trainer, who is a mum with a child on the spectrum too.

Castlebar Tidy Towns is inviting all local community groups, sports clubs, schools and interested individuals to take part in a simple yet important Biodiversity Survey โ€“ the FIT Count (Flower-Insect Timed Count).
ย
The idea is straightforward: – Watch a small patch of flowers (50cm x 50cm) for just 10 minutes, and count how many insects visit during that time. That is all it takes.
ย
This is part of a nationwide citizen science project aimed at measuring change in local biodiversity over time โ€“ and your input could make a real difference in building that picture for Castlebar and the wider area.
ย
Whether it is a school garden, community plot, sports ground, roadside verge or simply a window box, all spaces count. It is a great opportunity to get people engaged with nature and to become more aware of the importance of pollinators in our environment.
ย
The survey needs to be carried out by the end of September.ย https://biodiversityireland.ie/surveys/fit-counts/
