Tara by Name, Tara by Nature? Exploring the archaeological connections between Ireland’s ‘Temair’ places.
Could there be another Tara in Mayo?
The Discovery Programme and Abarta Heritage are delighted to announce an upcoming workshop exploring the archaeology associated with places called ‘Tara’ with a focus on Tavraun, Co. Mayo. This workshop will take place in The Thatch, Kilmovee, Thursday 23rd April at 7 pm and all are welcome to attend.
This workshop is part of the ‘Tara by Name, Tara by Nature’ project, which is led by The Discovery Programme, Ireland’s leading archaeological research centre. The Discovery Programme – in collaboration with research partners – has been involved in decades of archaeological investigations at the Hill of Tara, County Meath. This well-known archaeological complex holds a significant place in Ireland’s past; however, it is not the only place with this name, and similar monument types and/or archaeological landscapes may exist elsewhere.
‘Tara by Name, Tara by Nature? Exploring the archaeological connections between Ireland’s temair places’ is a two-year, Research-Ireland funded project exploring the archaeology associated with places called ‘Tara’ across the island of Ireland. Many of these ‘Tara’ places are linked to clearly visible, upstanding archaeological remains, while others are less obvious, often with little to no evident remains. By exploring these other Tara or *temair* sites beyond County Meath, this research aims for a greater understanding of these sites within their local landscapes and communities, in addition
to helping to provide a deeper insight into the Hill of Tara itself and its potential connections to other similar sites around the country.
The Discovery Programme’s initial research shows Tavraun is of significant interest, with strong placename evidence linking it to Tara. The project team, led by Dr. Susan Curran and Abarta Heritage, will be holding a workshop in The Thatch, Kilmovee on Thursday, 23rd April at 7 – 8.30pm, to explore these connections and hear about stories of other sites in the locality.
